Decree No. 2007-588 of 24 April 2007 on salt for human consumption

On the report of the Minister of Economy, Finance and Industry,
Having regard to Directive 98/34/EC of the European Parliament and the Council of 22 June 1998 laying down a procedure of information in the field of standards and technical regulations and of rules on services of the Information Society, set the notification December 19, 2005 to the European Commission;
Given the Consumer Code, in particular Articles L. 214-1 and L. 214-2;
Considering Decree No. 89-674 of September 18, 1989 as amended on additives for use in foodstuffs intended for human consumption;
Considering the opinion of the French Agency for Food Safety, dated May 31, 2006;

Decrees:
Article 1
It is prohibited to possess for sale or free distribution, offer for sale, sell or distribute for free salt for human consumption that do not meet the requirements of this decree.
Article 2
Salts for human consumption are defined as follows:
1 ° The food grade salt is a crystalline product consisting predominantly of sodium chloride from salt marshes, rock salt or brine from the dissolution of rock salt and the following specifications:
Sodium chloride: not less than 97% of the dry weight, exclusive of additives;
Copper: not more than 2 mg / kg;
Lead: Not more than 2 mg / kg;
Arsenic: not more than 0.5 mg / kg;
Cadmium: not more than 0.5 mg / kg;
The sales description of the food grade salt is "cooking salt", "table salt" or "salt".
2 ° The gray sea salt food grade is a crystalline product consisting predominantly of sodium chloride from salt marshes and exclusively with the following specifications:
Sodium chloride: not less than 94% of the dry weight, exclusive of additives;
Copper: not more than 2 mg / kg;
Lead: Not more than 2 mg / kg;
Arsenic: not more than 0.5 mg / kg;
Cadmium: not more than 0.5 mg / kg;
The sales description of the gray sea salt is "gray sea salt food," "gray sea salt, table" or "gray sea salt cooking.
Article 3
Only can be added to salt for human consumption and nutritional substances defined by a decree of the ministers responsible for consumer affairs, agriculture and health, issued after consultation with the French Agency for Food Safety and regardless of additives referred to in Article 2 of Decree of 18 September 1989 referred to above, this Order sets, where applicable, the corresponding labeling.
Article 4
Salts for human consumption and lawfully manufactured or marketed in accordance with fair practice in another member state of the European Union or party to the Agreement on the European Economic Area and Turkey can be marketed on the French territory.
Article 5
The Minister of Economy, Finance and Industry, the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, the Minister of Health and Solidarity and the Minister for Industry shall be responsible, each in the relates to the implementation of this decree will be published in the Official Journal of the French Republic.
